Definition of test cricket
There are two types of cricket played internationally, test cricket and other forms of international cricket. All levels of cricket can be broken down into these two categories depending on how competitive they are.
Test matches are an integral part of The International Cricket Council (ICC) game. These are typically longer than one day with three or more innings for each team. They last around four days usually starting at 9am and finishing well after midnight.
These games are really important to the growth and success of any country’s cricketing side because they help develop your top players and teams as well as giving you some high intensity competition! Teams that win lots of tests get recognized for their strength so it is not only good for individual player development but also internal leadership too.
Other types of cricket include non-test match competitions such as ODI‘s (one day tournaments), T20I’s (twenty twenty games which normally run for less than three hours), and TwentyTwenty(or Twenty Four). These are all very popular formats in the world of cricket.
The most recent addition to the ICC tournament structure was the Champions Trophy in June 2017 where the winner will play Australia in what has been dubbed the Grand Final. This event was hosted by England and is now an annual occurrence. It was originally called the World Cup Qualifier until 2018 when it got rebranded.
First class cricket
First-class cricket is simply the highest level of domestic cricket in Australia and some countries around the world. It is typically referred to as “test” cricket because it was only ever played for at this level in test match format – two halves of 60 minutes each, with an interval break.
Nowadays, there are three variations of first-class cricket: 50-over games (known as one dayers), 40-overs per side matches (known as Twenty20) and limited-overs series (of either 10 or 20 matches). These different formats determine how many balls each player has in their half of the game, but otherwise they play the same amount of time together!
First-class cricketers usually earn more money than other levels of the sport, and so enjoy a higher standard of living. They are also given better facilities to practice on, longer breaks between sessions, and bigger teams that give them greater exposure.
Test matches used to be the pinnacle of the game, but now most major tournaments use one dayer, twenty over or both competitions jointly under the name ‘Tests’. This means that playing test cricket has become less specialised.
If you want to make it into international cricket then playing test cricket isn’t necessarily going to help your cause, although winning a few one dayers can do wonders for your self-confidence!

History of test cricket
When we talk about the history of test cricket, what we mean is how it has evolved into the match type that it is today. It’s important to note that while there have been some tests in the past, none of them were actually considered test matches at the time.
Test cricket as we know it was first introduced by England in May 1880 when they played Australia at The Oval in London. This eight-ball game would become an integral part of the sport and helped establish the concept of one team trying to beat the other team with their own tactics and strategies.
Since then, every member country has competed against each other at least once a year for what people call a test championship. Some years are more important than others but everyone knows that a test series is always worth watching!
The reason why we refer to these games as ‘tests’ comes from the word try. As mentioned before, test teams use different styles and techniques to win the game, which makes this term appropriate. A trial is something that you put yourself through to see if you can do well, just like a test is!
Who played test cricket?
There are two main types of cricket that we talk about when discussing the history of the game- test matches and shorter, more frequent games called one day internationals (ODI’s) or Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is).
Both tests and One Day Internationals (ODI’s) have been conducted by all major cricket playing nations since the sport was first organized in England back in 1880. A team of twenty players is chosen for each match, with only fifteen allowed to be members of the national side at any given time.
The number of permitted overhires or guest players at a test level is just three, while ODI teams can field up to eleven “overhired” players per match. These extra cricketers are not considered part of the national squad but are instead invited to play as an extension of the team. This way, they get some money and exposure, helping their career, while also giving their country an advantage in the game!
At the seventy-sixth annual presentation ceremony of the Wisden Trophy, then current holder New Zealand player Daniel Vettori stated his opinion that it would make sense to drop the word ‘test’ from the name due to its exclusionary nature. He argued that this could help promote the growth of the game and increase fan engagement.

Who won test cricket?
The term ‘test’ is used to describe an important type of one-day international (ODI) cricket. It was first played in February 1909 during a match between England and South Africa at the Oval in London, England. This contest would go onto be known as the inaugural Ashes test.
The winner of this test was determined by who scored more runs or got more big hits. Or both! Unfortunately, no formal rules exist for determining a test winner, but people have come up with their own methods.
Some say if there is only 1 person left in each team then it is over for that team. Others say if you add together all the numbers in a team’s score then that is the final total. Yet others say if every member of a team has contributed equally towards winning the test then they should get equal credit. And some simply use gut feeling!
Whatever method you choose to use, make sure it is fair to all involved! Never count out a team because they do not include your personal favorite player. Also, remember that even if one team has been totally eliminated, the game still counts as a win for their opponents!
What are the rules of test cricket?
The level of test cricket is the highest for professional sports. It is also one of the most popular versions of the game. There are two levels of test match cricket: limited-over (or ODI) matches and longer, more in depth tests or Tests.
ODI’s were originally called ‘one day internationals’ because they were only played for one day. They have now become an integral part of the game with almost every team playing them at some stage during their season.
A 50 over game is made up of 10 innings of five balls each. This means there are 5 rounds of bowling by each side and 2 rounds of batting before the teams change sides. A maximum of 100 runs can be scored per team per half which makes it very close games!
Tests however last three days making them twice as long to complete. Each player has 25 minutes of time on the field with a 30 minute break between each session. This gives players much needed rest after a hard day of bowling and hitting.
What are the rules of first class cricket?
The term “first-class” is typically associated with test matches, but there is no formal definition for this. Some countries use different definitions for what constitutes first-class cricket, which can lead to some confusion.
In Australia, New Zealand, England and South Africa, one match per team in each season will be graded as first-class. This is referred to as an Australian summer, NZ winter, English autumn or SA spring tour. These tours are usually three tests, five ODIs or both.
These teams also have two other rounds of play during these tournaments – either two Twenty20s (or T20I) games per day, or a maximum of just one. All remaining matches are considered List A cricket or lower grade competition.
India and Pakistan do not have any defined tiers of domestic competitions. However, India does have its own version of limited overs cricket called the Indian Premier League (IPL). There are ten teams in the league that play across twenty eight days. Each team has up to six players that represent them throughout the tournament.
The winner is determined by points gained through a combination of how well your team performs in a given round and how many wins you achieve overall.
Who is the current cricket world cup champion?
The winner of this year’s tournament was England, who beat New Zealand in the final back in July. They won by two runs and so they are currently champions!
England have already qualified for next years’s competition as winners of group A, along with Australia, India and South Africa. So now we must look at how they became champions!
The team played twenty-two matches during the championship – that’s almost one per match. This includes three practice games and an extra semi-final to determine who would play the final.

There are two main types of cricket game – test cricket and first class cricket.
A test match is usually longer than a one dayer or a few days’ limited overs game. It can go up to five days depending on whether there is a result or not. If both teams reach the end without a result then a tie happens and a new set of rules apply.
In a tied test match, whoever has scored more runs wins. But if no side gets a total over 200 then a net run rate calculation takes place instead.
This calculates how many runs each team would need to make up in their next innings to be considered successful (based on how well their batting and bowling performed today).

There is no easy way to win a championship! That’s what makes sports so great, you need every player working hard for each other and then hoping for some good luck along the way. It’t not always pretty or straightforward, but that’s why it’s fun!
The best team of sport champions I have ever watched are the United States men’s national soccer teams. They may not always put up the most flashy stats or score the most goals, but they never give up. Even when things look very bad, they keep fighting and putting in the work until something goes their way.
That’s what made them Champions 5 times in a row from 2010-2014!
