One-day matches
A one-day match is just what it sounds like – it’s only one day! Teams play each other for usually around three hours, with the winner being determined by a score or beeped off at the end of the game.
The ICC has several tournaments every year where teams compete in one-day games. The most well known are probably the World Cup and Champions Trophy, which have separate competitions for both men’s and women’s cricket. These competitions last between ten to twenty days, depending on how many rounds there are.
There are also some non-competition events that count as one-days, such as this season’s Twenty20 World Championship, which was held in Australia in November and December. This championship had two different formats: fifty over per team halves (similar to a normal T20) and full 100 overs per side. Each format has its own set of rules and regulations.
Twenty-over matches
A twenty-over match is just one quarter of an international cricket game! This is the shortest form of cricket, as there are only 20 balls in each team’s half (or “overs”) period to score points.
A twenty- over match can either be a maximum of 5 minutes longer than normal time or 10 minutes shorter depending upon how many runs have been scored by both teams. This depends on whether it is being played for high stakes or not. For example, if it is a low-stakes friendly competition then the match will go much faster.
The most common way to play a twenty-over match is to use the Dukes model. Each side has five players with two bowlers per player. The batting order is decided randomly at the start of the match and then players swap positions after every ball. This changes who gets to hit when and where so everyone is always thinking about the next batsman.
Interchanging position means changing which foot you place your front leg on while stepping out of the field of action. This takes some getting used to but once you do, you will never look back!
Twenty-four-over matches
In twenty-four over cricket, there are always three batsmen in the batting order and only one bowler. This is because there are only four positions in the field: wicket keeper (or ‘keeper’), two outfielders, and a giver of run out balls or a striker.
The team that wins this type of match gets to choose which player to take the new ball. The winner can be determined by lots of different factors depending on who has the most runs at the time!
Twenty-Four Over Games are very popular with international teams as they give their players plenty of opportunity to play. Many major tournaments use these types of games as a way to reduce stress on the top scorers as a break before they go back into the tournament.
These twenty-four over contests last an average of about forty minutes long and are some of the fastest sports around.
Test matches
A test match is an extended, in-depth game that typically lasts three to five days. The term “test” comes from the British word for examination.
A test match usually starts with a few minutes of ceremonial play (the toss), followed by time for the teams to meet at the pitch and shake hands. This is called the pre-game activity or warm up.
The players then take their positions and the umpires call the captains to begin the game. Play continues until one team has scored twenty runs and been out twice within the same over. At this point, the other team wins unless there are less than ten balls left in the innings.
If either side reaches its target before the end of the allotted overs, then they win. If not, then the away team wins and the match is drawn!
You can watch most test cricket live on TV or online. Some countries also have radio coverage. People who cannot access these services may be able to listen via the internet or phones as well. Many sports bars show international games too.
Test matches are always between two fully qualified teams so they are always worth watching. Even if you don’t know the rules very well, it is still interesting to see how the sport is played at its highest level!
One-day matches
A one day match is typically played for a set amount of time. The time span can be anywhere from two to five hours long, depending on how many games are in the tournament. Teams play each other as many times during the game as possible!
The ICC has several different types of one day cricket tournaments. Some have just a few teams involved while others are more expansive. These larger competitions are called World Cups or Champions Tournaments.
The most well known type of one day competition is the 50 over (or fifty) run contest. Each team gets to field up to fifteen players per position. This means there could be three mainstays at every position, or twelve total players on the field at any given time.
These twenty player squads must remain intact until the end of the match, so no extra people can come into the field or players cannot leave the field unless they are replaced.
This is why some positions become very valuable early in a match, before the batting lineup is even chosen! Fielders like the wicketkeeper, who only need to keep an eye on the ball for ten minutes, get this honor frequently.
Twenty-over matches
A twenty-over match is just one session of cricket that is made up of twenty individual balls. The game length for this type of contest is typically forty minutes, which makes it the longest style of cricket!
A twenty-over match can either be a fifty over game (each team gets to choose how many players they want to field) or an eight-ball blitz where each player has two shots. These games are very popular among people who do not necessarily play cricket but enjoy watching it.
These types of contests have become increasingly common as more and more countries adopt the sport. Many FIFA tournaments use a twenty-over format, and professional golf uses a similar number of strokes per round.
Thinking about cricket in terms of time rather than distance gives viewers the chance to watch different styles of the game. This is why these twenty-over formats are so popular.
Twenty-over matches
A twenty-over match is just one quarter of an international cricket game. It is made up of four quarters, or phases, of play. The first phase is to bat for 20 minutes. During this time, either team can score a maximum of 10 runs per player.
Once every player has batted once, there will be a two-minute break before the next phase, which is to field. This is called the change over.
The third phase is to bowl for another ten minutes. During this time, each bowler gets three balls. Each ball can be run, floated or pitched.
Lastly, the fourth phase is to field again for another ten minutes. After that, there is a five-minute interval and then the final phase, which is to go back into batting.
Twenty-over games are very popular in world cricket because they keep things fast paced. There is always something happening throughout all four phases!
Twenty-over matches
A twenty-over match is just one quarter of an international cricket game. It is made up of four quarters, or sets, of play. The first set is usually the toss to see who bats or bowls, then comes field settings, powerplay and final overs.
A full 50-ball innings in this format is normally two thirds bowling and third batting. This means that there are three parts to each half of the innings. Each part can have different lengths depending on the situation. For example, if the fielding team has run out of time before they get a result, then the captain may choose to go for a quick bowler instead of trying to bat through the PowerPlay.
Twenty-overs per side is the usual limit for a match unless it is a Super Over (more about those later). Some countries only use thirty minutes’ worth of the Power Play as extra time when needed, while others don’t use it at all!
